Alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) is a homodimeric enzyme (86 kDa) containing two zinc atoms per monomer essential for its catalytic activity. It is optimally active at alkaline pH and is found across prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms with structural adaptations suited to each environment. ALP plays a key role in liver metabolism and skeletal development. In bacteria, it provides inorganic phosphate, while in yeast, it serves as a model for membrane protein sorting studies.
