Target Information
BMI-1 is a component of the Polycomb group (PcG) multiprotein PRC1 complex, which maintains the transcriptionally repressive state of many genes, including Hox genes, during development. The PRC1 complex functions via chromatin remodeling and histone modification, mediating monoubiquitination of histone H2A at Lys-119, leading to heritable changes in gene expression. Within the PRC1 complex, BMI-1 is required to stimulate the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase activity of RNF2/RING2.
