Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. At least 20 CK types are known, classified as type I (acidic) and type II (basic).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is a useful marker for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
All epithelial cells express at least one acidic and one basic cytokeratin.
