Product Specific Information

The eBioY1/82A antibody reacts with CD68, a member of the sialomucin family closely related to lysosomal-associated membrane proteins (LAMPs) and scavenger receptors. CD68 is primarily an intracellular protein localized in late endosomes but also appears on the surface of myeloid-derived cells such as monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, neutrophils, basophils, mast cells, and certain hematopoietic progenitor cells.

The function of CD68 is not fully understood, but its structure suggests a role in antigen processing or presentation and in protecting lysosomal membranes from hydrolytic enzymes. Expression has also been observed in activated T cells and subsets of B lymphocytes.

Staining Characteristics:

  • Surface staining: B cells and a minor subset of monocytes
  • Intracellular staining: ~50% of B cells and most monocytes

Target Information

CD68 (Macrosialin) is a 110 kDa integral membrane glycoprotein predominantly expressed in lysosomes of monocytes and macrophages, and to a lesser extent in dendritic cells and granulocytes. It plays a role in phagocytic activity, lysosomal metabolism, and cell interactions. CD68 expression is also observed in interdigitating reticulum cells, histiocytic lymphomas, AML, and granulocytic sarcomas. Elevated CD68 levels have been reported in CD34+ cells across various malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia.
