Product Specific Information
The MRQ-48 monoclonal antibody recognizes human CD71, also known as the transferrin receptor. CD71 exists as a homodimer on the cell surface and is essential for cellular growth. It is expressed on placental syncytiotrophoblasts, endocrine pancreas, hepatocytes, myocytes, basal keratinocytes, spermatocytes, and erythroid precursors. CD71 is also expressed by immature proliferating cells, at low levels on resting mature lymphocytes, and upregulated after antigen or mitogen stimulation of T and B cells.
CD71 expression aids in identifying erythroid leukemia, benign erythroid proliferative disorders, and myelodysplastic syndrome.

This MRQ-48 antibody has been reported for use in immunohistochemical staining of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections, microscopy, and immunohistochemical staining.
Applications Tested:
Tested by immunohistochemistry of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded human tissue using low pH antigen retrieval. Recommended dilution ≤1:100. Antibody should be titrated for optimal performance.
Target Information
Cellular uptake of iron occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis of ligand-occupied transferrin receptor into specialized endosomes. Endosomal acidification leads to iron release. The apotransferrin-receptor complex is recycled to the cell surface, returning to neutral pH and losing affinity for its receptor.
Transferrin receptor is essential for erythrocyte and nervous system development. Serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) is used to detect erythropoietin (EPO) misuse by athletes and as a diagnostic marker for anemias associated with rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, irritable bowel syndrome, and HIV infection.
