Target Information
Isoform 1 functions as an extracellular chaperone that prevents aggregation of nonnative proteins and inhibits amyloid fibril formation. It maintains partially unfolded proteins for refolding by other chaperones and protects cells against apoptosis and complement-mediated cytolysis. Intracellular isoforms interact with ubiquitin ligase complexes to promote proteasomal degradation of target proteins and modulate NF-kappa-B activity. Nuclear isoforms promote apoptosis, while mitochondrial isoforms inhibit BAX-dependent cytochrome c release, regulating cell proliferation and survival.
