In eukaryotes, phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins on serine and threonine residues regulate essential cellular functions such as division, homeostasis, and apoptosis. Protein phosphatases are key enzymes in this process. The protein phosphatase (PP) holoenzyme typically consists of a regulatory, variable, and catalytic subunit. Four major PP catalytic subunit families are known: PP1, PP2A, PP2B (calcineurin), and PP2C. The PP2A family includes PP2A alpha and PP2A beta subfamily members. Another catalytic subunit, PPX (also known as PP4), is considered part of a novel PP family.
