Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD21 (CR2), a 145 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein (complement C3d receptor - C3dR) expressed on B lymphocytes, follicular dendritic cells, some epithelial cells, and subsets of T lymphocytes. It is not expressed on immature B cells.
Target Information
CD21 (complement receptor 2, CR2, C3D receptor, EBV receptor) binds C3 complement fragments, especially its breakdown fragments, which remain covalently attached to complement-activating surfaces or antigens.
CD21 plays key roles in:
- Uptake and retention of immunocomplexes
- Survival of memory B cells
- Development and maintenance of the humoral response to T-dependent antigens
CD21 also serves as a receptor for Epstein-Barr virus and is involved in prion targeting to follicular dendritic cells. A soluble form (sCD21) retains ligand-binding ability.
CD21 interacts with complement components (C3d, C3dg, iC3b), EBV, and IFNα, and associates with CD23, CD19, CD81, and Leu13 to form a signal-transduction complex for B cell activation.
Genetic variations in CD21 are linked to susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus type 9 (SLEB9).
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
