Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD21 (CR2), a 145 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein (complement C3d receptor - C3dR) expressed on B lymphocytes, follicular dendritic cells, some epithelial cells, and subsets of T lymphocytes. It is not expressed on immature B cells.
Target Information
CD21 (complement receptor 2, CR2, C3D receptor, EBV receptor) binds C3 complement fragments, especially its breakdown fragments, which remain covalently attached to complement-activating surfaces or antigens. CD21 plays important roles in:
- Uptake and retention of immune complexes
- Survival of memory B cells
- Development and maintenance of humoral responses to T-dependent antigens
CD21 also serves as a receptor for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and is involved in targeting prions to follicular dendritic cells, facilitating neuroinvasion after peripheral exposure. A soluble form (sCD21) retains ligand-binding ability. CD21 associates with CD19, CD81, and Leu13 to form a signal-transduction complex involved in B cell activation. Genetic variations in the CD21 gene are linked to susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus type 9 (SLEB9). Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
