Target Information

Keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) is a large, heterogeneous glycoprotein composed of subunits (350–390 kDa) forming aggregates of 4,500,000–13,000,000 Da. Each subunit contains two copper atoms that bind one oxygen molecule, giving an opalescent blue color when oxygenated. KLH is highly immunogenic yet safe for human use, making it an ideal vaccine carrier protein. It is available only as a purified biological product from Megathura crenulata.

KLH is widely used as a carrier protein for haptens (small molecules such as peptides or drugs) that are not immunogenic alone. Its large size, multiple epitopes, and lysine residues allow efficient hapten coupling and strong immune responses. Being phylogenetically distant from mammals, KLH minimizes cross-reactivity in mammalian models. However, due to its tendency to aggregate, handling may require care as aggregates can limit conjugation efficiency.
