Target Information

The SMN complex plays a catalytic role in the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), which are essential components of the spliceosome and play an important role in pre-mRNA splicing.
Most spliceosomal snRNPs contain a common set of Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, and SNRPG) that form a heptameric ring on the Sm site of small nuclear RNA to create the core snRNP.
In the cytosol, these Sm proteins are initially sequestered in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by the chaperone CLNS1A. The SMN complex dissociates CLNS1A and facilitates assembly of the active core snRNPs for nuclear transport.
GEMIN5 functions as the snRNA-binding protein of the SMN complex.
