Target Information
The SMN complex catalyzes the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), which are essential components of the spliceosome responsible for pre-mRNA splicing. Most spliceosomal snRNPs contain a common set of Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, and SNRPG) that form a heptameric ring on the Sm site of small nuclear RNA. In the cytosol, these Sm proteins are initially bound in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by the chaperone CLNS1A. The SMN complex mediates the dissociation of CLNS1A and transfers Sm proteins to the SMN-Sm complex, initiating snRNP assembly and nuclear transport. GEMIN5 functions as the snRNA-binding protein within the SMN complex.
