Target Information
Tryptase gamma (TPSG1), also known as serine protease 31 or transmembrane tryptase, is an enzyme encoded by the TPSG1 gene in humans. Tryptases are trypsin-like serine proteases belonging to the peptidase family S1. They are enzymatically active only as heparin-stabilized tetramers and resistant to known endogenous proteinase inhibitors.
Several tryptase genes are clustered on chromosome 16p13.3, with four functional genes identified: alpha I, beta I, beta II, and gamma I. Beta I and beta II have allelic variants (alpha II, beta III), and gamma I has an allelic variant (gamma II). Beta tryptases are mainly expressed in mast cells, while alpha tryptases predominate in basophils.
This gene differs from other tryptase family members by having a C-terminal hydrophobic domain that may serve as a membrane anchor. Tryptases are implicated as mediators in asthma and other allergic or inflammatory disorders.
