Target Information
Tryptase gamma, also known as serine protease 31 or transmembrane tryptase, is an enzyme encoded by the TPSG1 gene in humans.
Tryptases are trypsin-like serine proteases (peptidase family S1) that are enzymatically active only as heparin-stabilized tetramers and are resistant to known endogenous proteinase inhibitors.
Several tryptase genes are clustered on chromosome 16p13.3, with four functional genes identified: alpha I, beta I, beta II, and gamma I.
Each has allelic variants (e.g., alpha II, beta III, gamma II). Beta tryptases are predominant in mast cells, while alpha-tryptases are mainly expressed in basophils.
The TPSG1 gene differs from others in the family by having a C-terminal hydrophobic domain that may serve as a membrane anchor.
Tryptases have been implicated as mediators in asthma and other allergic or inflammatory disorders.
