Target Information
TRPM8 is a receptor-activated non-selective cation channel involved in detection of sensations such as coolness, being activated by cold temperatures below 25°C. It is also activated by icilin, eucalyptol, menthol, and modulation of intracellular pH, and is involved in menthol sensation.
TRPM8 is permeable to monovalent cations (Na⁺, K⁺, Cs⁺) and divalent cation (Ca²⁺). Expression in human tissues is mostly restricted to prostate epithelial cells, with moderate levels in normal prostate tissue and elevated levels in prostate cancer. TRPM8 mRNA has also been detected in nonprostatic primary tumors of breast, colon, lung, and skin origin, but rarely in corresponding normal tissues.
