Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified. Most CK family members belong to one of two classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) or type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 (KRT14), a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and is characteristic of stratified epithelial cells. It is a useful marker for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratins are expressed in all epithelial cells.
