Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both in keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified.
Most CKs are categorized into two classes:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Keratin 14 (KRT14) belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and pairs with keratin 5. It distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and serves as a marker for squamous cell carcinomas. KRT14 is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Typically, one member of the acidic family and one of the basic family are expressed in all epithelial cells.
