Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing tissues (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified, classified into two groups:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Keratin 14 (KRT14), a member of the type I subfamily, forms a pair with keratin 5 and is characteristic of stratified epithelial cells. It serves as a useful marker for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin family members are expressed in all epithelial cells.
