Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified, classified into two main types: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and serves as a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinoma. Expression of at least one acidic and one basic CK is observed in all epithelial cells.
