Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and produces several important proteins such as LPL, leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is an intracellular lipid droplet protein regulated hormonally and localized to the lipid droplet surface. Upon lipolytic stimulation, it is phosphorylated by protein kinase A and modulates hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) activity, influencing triacylglycerol hydrolysis.
Perilipin expression is restricted to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells, with two isoforms (A and B) produced by alternative splicing of a single gene.
