Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin, along with desmin, is expressed during early stages of cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It plays a role in steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin leads to cytoskeletal rearrangement and facilitates cholesterol transport to mitochondria, enhancing steroid synthesis.
