JNK1/JNK3 is activated by various stimuli and mediates immediate-early gene expression. It plays a role in TNF-alpha induced apoptosis and UV radiation-induced apoptosis, likely through cytochrome c-mediated pathways. Mouse studies indicate a key role in T cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
