Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which includes proteins similar to the Drosophila gene mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and the C. elegans gene Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways. SMAD1 mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signals involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand stimulation, SMAD1 is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinase, forming a complex with SMAD4 for transcription regulation. It is targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1 and SMURF2) for ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
