Target Information
Ribosomes are the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits contain four RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The encoded protein is a cytoplasmic ribosomal component of the 40S subunit, belonging to the S6E family. It serves as a major substrate for ribosomal protein kinases, with phosphorylation occurring on five C-terminal serine residues. Phosphorylation is stimulated by growth factors, tumor promoters, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein is implicated in controlling cell growth and proliferation through selective translation of specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
