Target Information
AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal life.
AFP expression in adults is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma, though hereditary persistence can occur without pathology.
The protein is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, located tandemly on chromosome 4 with the albumin gene.
AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms and binds copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin.
AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly, while elevated serum AFP is linked to hepatocellular carcinoma, teratoblastoma, colorectal, pancreatic cancers, and germ cell neoplasms.
