Target Information

IL-1 alpha (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is encoded by the IL1A gene, located on chromosome 2q13. IL-1 alpha signals through two receptors, IL-1RI and IL-1RII, shared with IL-1 beta.
It plays a key role in innate host defense by inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses. IL-1RA (IL-1 Receptor Antagonist) moderates IL-1 alpha activity by competitive inhibition.
IL-1 alpha regulates NF-kappaB and MAP kinase pathways, stimulates IL6 and COX-2 expression, and enhances nitric oxide production. Elevated IL-1 alpha levels are linked to chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
