Target Information
Interleukin 8 (IL-8, CXCL8) is a 72 amino acid pro-inflammatory factor belonging to the CXC chemokine subfamily. It binds cell surface receptors IL-8RA and IL-8RB and functions as a chemoattractant and potent angiogenic factor. Expression and secretion of IL-8 are induced by inflammatory stimuli in various cells, including macrophages and endothelial cells. In endothelial cells, IL-8 is stored in Weibel-Palade bodies. IL-8, first isolated from osteosarcoma cells, contains the ELR-motif (Glu-Leu-Arg) and signals through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors. Previous names include NAP-1, GCP-1, MONAP, and protein 3-10C. IL-8 and other CXC chemokines form a gene cluster on chromosome 4q. Studies indicate IL-8’s role in tumor angiogenesis and growth, and in the pathogenesis of bronchiolitis.
