Target Information

Interleukin 8 (IL-8, CXCL8) is a 72 amino acid pro-inflammatory factor belonging to the CXC chemokine subfamily. It binds to cell surface receptors IL-8RA and IL-8RB, functioning as a chemoattractant and potent angiogenic factor.
IL-8 expression and secretion can be induced by various inflammatory stimuli in many cell types, including macrophages and endothelial cells. In endothelial cells, IL-8 is stored in Weibel-Palade bodies.

IL-8 was first isolated from osteosarcoma cells and contains the ELR-motif (Glu-Leu-Arg), signaling through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors.
Previous nomenclature includes:

• Neutrophil Activating Protein 1 (NAP-1)
• Granulocyte Chemotactic Protein 1 (GCP-1)
• Monocyte-derived Neutrophil-Activating Peptide (MONAP)

IL-8 and related CXC chemokines form a gene cluster on chromosome 4q.
Studies suggest IL-8 plays roles in tumor angiogenesis and growth, and in the pathogenesis of bronchiolitis, a common viral respiratory disease.
