Target Information
The WNT gene family consists of structurally related genes encoding secreted signaling proteins involved in oncogenesis and developmental processes such as cell fate regulation and embryonic patterning.
WNT4 is the first signaling molecule shown to influence the sex-determination cascade. It encodes a protein with 98% amino acid identity to mouse and rat Wnt4.
WNT4 and nuclear receptors that antagonize testis-determining factors regulate female development and prevent testes formation.
WNT4, WNT2, and WNT7B may be associated with abnormal proliferation in breast tissue.
Mutations in this gene can result in Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome and SERKAL syndrome.
