Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the RecQ subfamily and the DEAH subfamily of DNA/RNA helicases.
DNA helicases are involved in transcription, replication, recombination, and repair.
The WRN protein contains a nuclear localization signal in the C-terminus and shows predominant nucleolar localization.
It has intrinsic 3′ to 5′ DNA helicase and exonuclease activities.
Interactions with Ku70/80 suggest a role in double-strand DNA break repair.
Defects in this gene cause Werner syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by premature aging.
