Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA, and their protein components vary significantly among species, hindering recognition by sequence homology. The MRPS11 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein similar to ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene exists on chromosome 20, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
