Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein consisting of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in milk and mucosal secretions and stored in neutrophil granules. LF plays roles in iron homeostasis, antimicrobial defense, anti-inflammatory response, cell growth regulation, and cancer protection. LTF removes Fe³⁺ from the environment and exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activity. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) are known, with receptors expressed in gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
