Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in milk, mucosal secretions, and neutrophil secondary granules. LF plays roles in iron homeostasis regulation, antimicrobial defense, anti-inflammatory activity, cellular growth and differentiation, and cancer protection.
LTF acts as a first-line defense against microbial infections through Fe³⁺ sequestration and exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) are known, and LTF receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
