Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis. NSE is stable in biological fluids and diffuses easily into extracellular medium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are damaged.
NSE is one of three mammalian enolases:
- ENO1 (alpha): expressed in most tissues
- ENO2 (gamma): expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells
- ENO3 (beta): expressed only in muscle
Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms. NSE antibodies are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineages, and neuroendocrine cells. Release of NSE from damaged neurons into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury.
Clinically, NSE is used as a sensitive marker for neuronal damage in conditions such as:
- Stroke
- Hypoxic brain damage
- Status epilepticus
- Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
- Herpetic encephalitis
- Pediatric neuroblastoma
- Small cell lung cancer
