Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis. NSE is stable in biological fluids and diffuses into extracellular medium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are injured.
NSE consists of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits:
- Alpha: expressed in most tissues
- Beta: expressed in muscle
- Gamma: expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells
Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms. NSE antibodies are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells. Release of NSE from damaged neurons into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker for neuronal injury.
Clinically, NSE is used as a marker in neurological disorders such as:
- Stroke
- Hypoxic brain damage
- Status epilepticus
- Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
- Herpetic encephalitis
Elevated NSE levels are also found in plasma and certain cancers, including pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
