Product Specific Information

  • Immunohistochemistry (PFA fixed):
Incubate antibody for 30 min at room temperature.
Staining of formalin-fixed tissues requires heating tissue sections in 10 mM Tris with 1 mM EDTA (pH 9.0) for 45 min at 95°C, followed by cooling at room temperature for 20 minutes.

Target Information

Neuron specific enolase (NSE, also known as ENO1, ENO2, ENO3 or enolase alpha, beta, gamma) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis. NSE is stable in biological fluids and diffuses into extracellular medium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) upon neuronal injury.

  • Expression:

    • Alpha-subunit: most tissues
    • Beta-subunit: muscle
    • Gamma-subunit: neurons and neuroendocrine cells
  • Clinical relevance:

    • Co-expressed with chromogranin A in neuroendocrine neoplasms
    • Marker for neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells
    • Biomarker for neuronal injury (e.g., stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, herpetic encephalitis)
    • Elevated in plasma of patients with neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer
