Product Specific Information

  • Immunohistochemistry (PFA fixed): incubate antibody for 30 min at room temperature.
  • For formalin-fixed tissues: heat tissue sections in 10 mM Tris with 1 mM EDTA, pH 9.0, for 45 min at 95°C, then cool at room temperature for 20 min.

Target Information

Neuron specific enolase (NSE, also known as ENO1, ENO2, ENO3 or enolase alpha, beta, gamma) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis.

NSE is stable in biological fluids and diffuses easily into extracellular medium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are damaged.

  • The alpha-subunit is expressed in most tissues.
  • The beta-subunit is expressed only in muscle.
  • The gamma-subunit is expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells.

Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms.
Antibodies to NSE are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineages, and neuroendocrine cells.
NSE release into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury and is clinically used to assess neuronal damage in disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis.
Elevated NSE concentrations are also observed in certain neoplasias, including pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
