Target Information

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis via activation of a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade after binding to the proto-oncogenic c-Met receptor. Secreted by mesenchymal cells, HGF acts as a multifunctional cytokine on epithelial cells, playing a central role in angiogenesis, tumorogenesis, and tissue regeneration. It is secreted as a single inactive polypeptide and cleaved by serine proteases into a 69-kDa alpha-chain and a 34-kDa beta-chain, linked by a disulfide bond to form the active heterodimeric molecule. Although belonging to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases, HGF has no detectable protease activity. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
