Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins functioning in both excitable and non-excitable cells. One class, the large conductance calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K+), is activated by both intracellular calcium increase and membrane depolarization.
The Maxi K+ channel core is a homotetramer containing voltage sensor and calcium-binding domains. In vascular smooth muscle, an auxiliary beta-subunit (1:1 ratio) modulates the channel, reducing the calcium concentration required for activation by 5–10 fold.
