Defensins are microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides produced by neutrophils. Members of the defensin family are highly similar in protein sequence.
This gene encodes β-Defensin 1, an antimicrobial peptide involved in epithelial resistance to microbial colonization. It is located near defensin α1 and has been implicated in cystic fibrosis pathogenesis.
