Target Information
Defensins are a family of antimicrobial and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. They are abundant in neutrophil granules and found in mucosal epithelia such as the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members share a conserved cysteine motif. The alpha-Defensin 3 protein is located in neutrophil microbicidal granules and contributes to phagocyte-mediated host defense. Several alpha-defensin genes are clustered on chromosome 8, and this gene differs from alpha-defensin 1 by a single amino acid.
