Target Information
Bestrophin 2 (Best2) forms calcium-sensitive chloride channels and is permeable to bicarbonate. The Best2 gene belongs to the bestrophin family of anion channels, sharing conserved exon–intron boundaries but distinct 3′ ends. Bestrophins are transmembrane proteins rich in aromatic residues, including an invariant Arg–Phe–Pro motif.
Mutations in the Best2 gene are linked to vitelliform macular dystrophy. The gene is mainly expressed in retinal pigment epithelium and colon.
Diseases associated with BEST2 include Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy and Bestrophinopathy.
