Alpha Tubulin forms a heterodimer with beta Tubulin, each approximately 55 kDa, serving as the fundamental building block of microtubules. These structures are essential for maintaining cell shape, intracellular transport, and mitosis in eukaryotic cells.
Microtubules are composed mainly of alpha and beta tubulins, while gamma tubulin is crucial for microtubule nucleation. Multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes are highly conserved across species. The alpha tubulin gene shows high similarity to the mouse and rat Tuba1 gene, with expression predominantly in differentiated neurological cells.
