Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play roles in cell motility, structure, and integrity. Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified; alpha actin is a major component of the contractile apparatus, while beta and gamma actins regulate cell motility. Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal muscle and is a key cytoskeletal component involved in filament formation. Actin filaments interact with myosin to assist in muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis.
Smooth muscle actin is expressed in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells in breast and salivary glands. Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene can cause familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6. Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and can appear in fibroblastic stress fibers during pathological contractile phenomena such as wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced variants of smooth muscle actin have been identified.
