Smooth Muscle Actin은 세포 이동성, 구조 및 안정성에 관여하는 고도로 보존된 단백질군인 액틴 패밀리에 속합니다. 알파, 베타, 감마 아이소폼이 존재하며, 알파 액틴은 수축성 장치의 주요 구성 요소입니다. 특히 smooth muscle actin은 평활근에서 발견되는 알파 액틴으로, 근육 수축, 세포 이동 및 세포질 분열에 관여합니다.
Smooth muscle actin은 혈관벽, 장벽, 자궁근층, 유선 및 타액선의 근상피 세포에 존재합니다. 해당 유전자의 결함은 가족성 흉부 대동맥류(type 6)를 유발할 수 있습니다. 알파-smooth muscle actin은 혈관 및 내장 평활근 세포에 풍부하며, 상처 치유 및 섬유수축성 질환 등 병리적 상황에서 섬유아세포의 스트레스 섬유에서도 발현됩니다. 여러 가지 대체 스플라이싱 변이가 보고되어 있습니다.
