Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity. Alpha actin is a major component of the contractile apparatus, while beta and gamma actins regulate cell motility. Smooth muscle actin (alpha actin) is found in skeletal and smooth muscle tissues and plays a role in muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis. It is expressed in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells. Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene are associated with familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6. Alpha-smooth muscle actin also appears in stress fibers of fibroblastic cells during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
