This gene encodes an enzyme involved in catalyzing the conversion of angiotensin I into a physiologically active peptide angiotensin II.
Angiotensin II acts as a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating peptide that regulates blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance.
This enzyme is a key component of the renin-angiotensin system.
Studies have linked the presence or absence of a 287 bp Alu repeat element in this gene with circulating enzyme levels and cardiovascular pathophysiologies.
Two major alternatively spliced variants encode somatic and testicular forms, both enzymatically active. Additional variants have been identified but are not fully characterized.
