Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of angiotensin I into the physiologically active peptide angiotensin II. Angiotensin II acts as a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating peptide, regulating blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance. The enzyme is a key component of the renin-angiotensin system.
The presence or absence of a 287 bp Alu repeat element in this gene has been linked to circulating enzyme levels and cardiovascular pathophysiologies. Two major alternatively spliced variants encode somatic and testicular forms, both equally active. Additional spliced variants have been identified but not fully characterized.
