This antibody reacts with p21 protein (Waf1, Cip1, SDI 1; intracellular antigen), a 21 kDa tumor suppressor that inhibits the activity of cyclin-dependent kinases and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA).
Target Information
Protein p21 is a tumor suppressor protein that inhibits Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK) and is transcriptionally activated by p53. It plays a crucial role in cellular response to genotoxic stress and acts as a major transcriptional target of p53.
- In the nucleus, p21 binds and inhibits Cdk1 and Cdk2, blocking the G1/S and G2/M transitions after DNA damage to allow DNA repair.
- In the cytoplasm, p21 exerts anti-apoptotic effects by inhibiting caspase 3 and apoptotic kinases ASK1 and JNK.
- p21 exhibits dual roles in carcinogenesis, functioning both as a tumor suppressor and as an oncogene.
