Target Information
The S100A8/A9 heterocomplex, also known as the MRP-8/MRP-14 complex or calprotectin, constitutes approximately 60% of the cytoplasmic protein fraction in circulating polymorphonuclear granulocytes and is also present in monocytes, macrophages, and ileal tissue eosinophils. Peripheral blood monocytes carry the antigen both extra- and intracellularly, while neutrophils carry it only intracellularly.
The S100A8/A9 complex exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulating, and antiproliferative properties, and serves as a potent chemotactic factor for neutrophils. Plasma concentrations are elevated in conditions associated with increased neutrophil activity, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Calprotectin is detectable in feces due to granulocyte transmigration through the intestinal wall, and elevated levels have been observed in various body fluids—including plasma, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, stools, and synovial fluid—during infection and inflammatory conditions.
